You're right, I did kill a human being.

But God told me...

That if I can fulfill my duty here, It will erase my guilt!

So I can't let you exorcise me. Sorry.

Hanako explaining his reason for being a School Mystery to Minamoto Kou, citing Kami-Sama as his guarantor of his penance, Chapter 3.

God, or Kami-Sama (神様 Kami-Sama?) is a character that is so far only mentioned by Hanako in the Jibaku Shounen Hanako-Kun series. Based from what Hanako has said about it throughout the series, it has given Hanako a second chance to atone for his sins by performing his duty as Hanako-San of the Toilet, the leader of the Seven Mysteries, and remove the Yorishiros of those who have gone astray, so that his wish may be granted.

Overview[]

So far in the series, Kami-Sama is only mentioned by Hanako, and no other characters, even supernatural ones have never mentioned about Kami-Sama in detail, though some characters such as Kako and Hyuuga Natsuhiko usually refer to the plural "gods", implying that there are more of them. What is known of the character so far is that it gave Yugi Amane the role of "Hanako" and to destroy all the Yorishiro in order for him to atone for all his sins, especially his murder of his brother Yugi Tsukasa, and potential downfall of the Yugi Family via suicide.

In the Pilot, Hanako has the same reasons as in the main series, however everytime he "breaks the rules", a sharp cut is added to his wrist which causes him to bleed. After saving Yashiro Nene from a transforming monster, he received his seventh stroke. This causes Hanako to not continue his interactions with Nene, for a time that is.

Personality[]

Main Series[]

For the most part, Kami-Sama can be understood as your typical Benevolent and Almighty God or at least, a powerful God put in charge of the Seven Mysteries that gave Yugi Amane a chance at redemption by giving him the role of "Hanako-san of the Toilet", the leader of the Seven Mysteries, and telling him that if he fulfills his role, he will be forgiven of all his sins. In fact, this very commission from Kami-Sama is what drives Hanako to fulfill his function as No.7 and the Leader of the Seven Mysteries for the whole story.

What...to...do? You are such a worrywart, No. 1.

Of course I know what it means to destroy a Yorishiro, and I am fulfilling my duties as School Mystery No. 7!

Besides, what's the problem? Let there be a supernatural infestation in the school. Even God would forgive that much!

Don't sweat it! We have No. 6 to take care of Urabon!

Hanako explaining to Kako that he wouldn't mind if there is a supernatural infestation, as even Kami-Sama would forgive that one, plus that No. 6 would take care of Urabon, Chapter 61. Later in Chapter 104, an actual supernatural infestation would happen, and true to his word, Kami-Sama did not do anything about it.

But an interesting yet suspicious note is that in Chapter 61, Hanako mentions to the other School Mysteries that even if a little supernatural infestation of Kamome Gakuen were to happen, that would be something even Kami-Sama would forgive, implying that to some extent, Kami-Sama is ok with the Seven Mysteries sometimes allowing the Supernatural to flood to the Near Shore at times or simply does not care about it enough to negatively respond to it. This eventually did happen in Chapter 104 as a result of the Broadcasting Club utilizing posters made by Shijima Mei that produced petals that then attached themselves to one's eyes and transform them into plant-like supernaturals when the time came, all to serve as a distraction so that Natsuhiko can approach the Big Clock at The Sealed Auditorium.

A chapter later, the Big Clock breaks due to Natsuhiko's blood, and stops the entirely of time for the school. But despite this, Kami-Sama didn't seem to act out or punish everyone involved, instead it was Kako and Mirai who acted on the disaster and changed the timeline into a new one so as to ensure that the supernatural infestation and subsequent time stop never happened. Even with that clear interference and changing of the timeline, Kami-Sama seemed to not have punished Kako and Mirai on that one and instead seemed to roll with it, provided it wasn't affected by the timeline being changed, and additionally, Kami-Sama did not punish Shijima Mei, who Nanamine Sakura noted to have made the flower posters by which the viral agent of the supernatural infestation was transmitted from.

Eversince that event, Kami-Sama also has not done anything eversince the creation of the New Present, including its fracturing into even more timelines due to the New Present Yashiro Nene's use of (Or rather, being manipulated by) the Sand Clock, and also hasn't stopped her attempts at restoring the Original Timeline as well.

Pilot[]

As seen in the Pilot, Kami-Sama is far more stern with Hanako, as when he gave Yashiro Nene more than two wishes after saving her from a transforming supernatural, he was punished by having a large cut on his wrist, which made him bleed in the process. Then it is seen that he had committed six prior offences before, thus the latest one was his seventh.

Theories[]

It is currently unknown which kind of God Kami-Sama is. It may be the general concept or notion of a God or Supreme Being, or in JSHK's Japanese setting, it could be a lesser but still powerful divine being who is a member of a group of powerful deities who are responsible for organizing the Seven Mysteries as a whole.

Singular Deity[]

Firstly, "Kami-Sama" may be THE GOD, as in THE ALMIGHTY GOD Himself. While not related to Japanese Religious understandings, a general Western Understanding of God as an Almighty Being is not far off.

If this is the case, then Kami-Sama should ideally be the Absolute wherein all things are nothing compared to it, and even beyond so, as the Seven Mysteries seem to be imperfect representations of universal or essential aspects that relates to a positive Godly attribute (In the superlative sense), such as Time, which is related to God's Eternity, Space, which is related to God's Omnipresence, and Knowledge("Records"), which is related to God's Omniscience. These are aspects that are more or less associated or quantified to such a entity as God.

This may possibly be the case, as while other characters mention multiple gods, Hanako only mentions the singular "Kami-Sama" instead, but that does not clarify whether it is really the case or not, hence why the second theory of plural deities is just as plausible.

Plural Deities[]

Alternatively, it is possible that "Kami-Sama" is but one of many gods that oversee the Seven Mysteries. Many characters, such as Kako and Hyuuga Natsuhiko mention the plural "gods" in the context of the Seven Mysteries, with Natsuhiko claiming that the Mysteries act as proxies for the gods.

Thus, Hanako's mention of a singular "Kami-Sama" may indicate that if the plural deities notion were true, then one of these gods is personally sponsoring Hanako and was the one responsible for giving him his mission. He may or may not be the most powerful among them but regardless, he may have a prominent role among the gods while at the same time, having an interest in Hanako to the point that he promises to forgive his sins if Hanako does what he was told as atonement.

Kami-Sama is The Entity[]

Thirdly, there is a possibility that given that Kami-Sama might be The Entity itself. There may be a few connections that possibly points to this theory:

  • Both Kami-Sama and The Entity (And by extension, their "servants" Hanako and Yugi Tsukasa) all share the same goal of The destruction of all the Yorishiro, but for different reasons (Atonement of sins for Hanako, ending all things for Tsukasa and The Entity)
  • Both have connections to the Seven Mysteries and the aspects they represent in particular, as Kami-Sama is the one who entrusted Hanako with his role, and The Entity has command of the aspects, demonstrating its control over time in Chapter 130.
  • Both Hanako and Tsukasa had spent their childhood in the Red House, where The Entity resided below and which Minamoto Teru postulated to be a source of connection between it and the Seven Mysteries, which is further corroborated by the Red House seemingly having the capabilities of some of the Seven Mysteries' members (Transportation through timelines, conjuring of giant insects, etc.
  • Then there is also Kami-Sama's seemingly nonchalant attitude towards a potential supernatural infestation of Kamome Gakuen and the Near Shore, and towards Kannagi Sacrifices, like what Hakubo attempted to do. When both Hakubo initated a sacrifice through Akane Aoi (And a little help from Aoi Akane) that later caused the Severance, and then later on, the Broadcasting Club initiated a supernatural infestation as a distraction so that Hyuuga Natsuhiko can get to the Big Clock at The Sealed Auditorium and try to destroy it with his supernatural blood, Kami-Sama does not quickly erase or stop the events at hand nor punish any of the School Mysteries that were involved in some way (Like Shijima Mei having made the flower posters that transmitted the supernatural infection in the first place) , and it only took Kako and Mirai changing the timeline into the New Present to stop everything else, and despite that, everything in it still went haywirem and the very thing they tried to remove still remained.

Thus with these points, it is possible that The Entity IS Kami-Sama Himself playing both sides so that its goal is more likely to be fulfilled, and so in doing so, it can relish in twisting or controlling anything and everything that happens.

Kami-Sama is Nanamine Sakura[]

A more fringe but probably very plausible theory is that Nanamine Sakura is the one identified as "Kami-Sama". Given that Akane Sumire refers to her as Hakubo's boss when talking to him about how she claimed that the Seven Mysteries are no longer needed to protect the Near Shore and as a result, their seats would be returned to their original form, it is implied that she had a hand in the formation of the Mysteries as a whole. If she were the one who assigned all the positions of the Seven Mysteries, then she would have interacted with Hanako at some point and then gave him his position as "Hanako-San of the Toilet".

Since we have the presupposition that:

  • 1: Hanako claims that it was "Kami-Sama" who gave him his position and the mission to destroy all the Yorishiro, and
  • 2: Sumire claims that it was Sakura who assigned and appointed all the Seven Mysteries to their seats

Thus:

  • 3: Therefore, it was Sakura who appointed Hanako to his position as Number Seven, and
  • 4: Therefore, Sakura IS Kami-Sama.
