I am a servant of the Clock Keepers. A poor pitiful minion bound by a contract. Incidentally, I'm in charge of catching mice.
— The Clockwork Cat introducing itself to Yashiro Nene, Chapter 123.

The Clockwork Cat (?), or simply known as Cat ( (ねこ) Kyatto?) is a supernatural who first appeared in Chapter 123. It is a talking clockwork cat that claims to be the Servant of the Clock Keepers, and is in charge of catching the thieving mice that run around the Big Clock trying to steal its gears and parts. For some reason, Yashiro Nene feels a sense of deja vu when interacting with it.

Originally, the Clockwork Cat was a human before the Clock Keepers took its soul and transferred it into a mechanical cat, possibly as a punishment for it changing the past before.

Appearance[]

The Clockwork Cat is a black cat of a rather slender build, indicating that its breed, if it does have one, is that of a Siamese breed. A large Winding Key is on its back, which clearly identifies the cat as yet another of the Clock Keeper's Clockwork constructs, much like the Clockwork Owls. It wears a black-colored vest and undershirt tailored to its size.

As a supernatural, the Clockwork Cat is cold to the touch, as Yashiro Nene notes when holding it, with the cat explaining its supernatural characteristics as to why.

Personality[]

As a Clockwork Cat[]

The Clockwork Cat appears to have a sly and playful personality, as it commended Yashiro Nene for her efforts in stealing a Clock Keeper's Automation Watch (Not knowing that it was Aoi Akane who gave it to her in the first place) and then mocked her for her failure to use the Big Clock at The Sealed Auditorium that led to its destruction. These personality traits seem to remind Nene of either Hanako's or Yugi Tsukasa's antics, and so she wondered if she had a sense of deja vu when she interacted with the Cat.

Despite having a large winding key on its back, the Clockwork Cat claims to not be a toy, as when Nene wondered on it being a toy, it hit her face with its paw before jumping away. It is also very consummate with its job and has a strong disdain for thieves and tresspassers, having angrily ranted at Nene several times about how she is unworthy when she was about to open the door to the Heart of the Clock Keeper's Boundary

On a funny note, the Clockwork Cat has a fondness for alcoholic drinks, especially Mulled Wine.

As a Human[]

Originally, the Cat was a human who was punished by the Clock Keepers for having changed time. Currently, it is unknown what personality it had as a human, although they could have a reason for turning back time.

Regardless, the Cat doesn't remember much of its past and it doesn't want to remember it at all.

Theories[]

The Cat is Hanako[]

There is a possible theory that the Clockwork Cat might be Hanako in a cat form, as its eyes are drawn the same way Hanako and Yugi Tsukasa's eyes are drawn, it has a primarily black color for its fur, which can remind Nene of the color of Hanako's gakuran uniform, its personality is somewhat like Hanako's own, and before Nene fully opened the door, she asked the Cat if they had met somewhere, suggesting that she is reminded of something familiar to her in their interactions.

The Cat is Tsukasa[]

Alternatively, it could also be Yugi Tsukasa who's within the Cat itself. For one, the Cat's mischieveous personality can be seen as belonging more to a character of Tsukasa's caliber. For another, the pupils of the eyes are often seen as full dots instead of the "crescent moon" style wherein the pupils stick to the edges of the irises like how Hanako's pupils usually go. But the most damning evidence is that in Chapter 110, after Tsukasa admits to being the mastermind behind the incident at Kamome Gakuen, when Akane asks Kako on what to do with him, Kako suggests that he be turned into a gear and put to good use in the clock. Perhaps if that theory is true instead, then Tsukasa's spirit is in the winding key and the Cat that it is attached to is merely its body

Following Chapter 124, the theory of the Cat being either Hanako or Tsukasa is strengthened by the revelation that the Cat was once human. Additionally, this theory could go strengthen the case for Hanako being the Cat as Amane did attempt to fix the Clock and while he didn't succeed, he was noted by Tsuchigomori to be the only one who changed his fate. Since the Clock Keepers only take a piece of the soul and put it in the mechanical bodies for their punishment, perhaps a part of Amane's soul is in the Cat, the rest remaining within the human Amane before he killed Tsukasa and committed suicide. Not to mention, in its words, the Cat was there for a long time, which would align with Amane, whereas Tsukasa was only there for a short while.

The Cat is Akane[]

The least likely of the theories is that the Cat is actually an iteration of Aoi Akane, which is hinted towards the end of Chapter 126, as Nene began to feel despair after failing to change her friend's fate with the use of the Mystical Hourglass many times. When Akane appears to Nene in his Clock Keeper form, he tells her that he has finally found her, implying that he has been searching for her the entire time that she was sucked into the Hourglass.

If that searching started when she was sucked into the Hourglass, then only two beings were present to witness it: Kako and the Clockwork Cat. And given Akane's line about finally finding her, it may be possible (But unlikely given the Cat and Akane's personalities being vastly different) that Akane IS the Cat.

Trivia[]

  • Save for its black fur color and the obvious Winding Key on its back, the Clockwork Cat almost resembles Shima, a talking cat character from Fox-Masked Guardian Spirit, one of AidaIro's earliest works. As such, both have their similarities.
    • Both cats are related to supernatural forces, as the former is a Clockwork construct that serves the Clock Keepers while the latter is a cat spirit that has lived for centuries and watches over the two kids throughout their entire centuries-long reincarnation cycle.
  • The Clockwork Cat is the latest new character to be introduced since Katakuri. This does not include all the New Present versions of the existing characters.
