For the original version of the character, see Akane Aoi

Hee Hee! You're so popular, Nene-Chan.

But who would expect less from the star of our class play!

Akane Aoi complementing Yashiro Nene, and reminding her that she's the star of their class play

Akane Aoi (赤根葵 Akane Aoi?), is first and foremost, a variant of Akane Aoi whose very existence has been altered thanks to the actions of Kako and Mirai, which led to the creation of the New Present.

In this New Present, Akane Aoi is a first year student at Kamome Academy's High School Division and Nene's best friend. She often teases her by acting as if Nene is hers, as she wanted Yashiro all to herself during the School Festival, and she was so worried when she left right after the completion of their performance.

Additionally, she and Aoi Akane were never childhood friends and as such, never got together. Instead, Minamoto Teru was her childhood friend, and they are now engaged to one another as part of their respective families' arrangement, much to Akane's frustration, and in spite of both Teru and Aoi's mutual disdain for it.

Appearance[]

She has the same appearance and outfits as her original counterpart, complete with her signature looped hair that complements her overall appearance.

Personality[]

Presumably, this version of Akane Aoi has the same personality as her original counterpart, however she is noticeably far more clingy towards Nene than her original counterpart. Additionally, she is more prim and proper towards Teru, who is her fiancée in the New Present, but in reality, it is all pretense for the sake of both their parents, and especially her mother.

In Chapter 114, she reveals her reasons for pretending to be a couple despite their mutual disdain for the arranged marriage is so that her mother would not be disappointed or lose heart, and also when they were both young, Teru told her that she was not his type as he sees her as a type of person that in his own words, "hang their heads and play the victim".

She is also rather protective of people she loves, especially Nene, and in Chapter 121, she demonstrates how far she is willing to protect her friends through the use of her Spirit Sword Skills in holding Yugi Amane off. In relation to this, she also demonstrates bravery and courage in the face of imminent danger, as when Akane took her place and asked her to run after Nene, she gave him a determined expression, and Akane took that as her wanting to stay behind and help, thus leading him to tell her to awaken Teru instead.

In some moments, a slip of her original counterpart's memories is made manifest, like when she gave a rather sad look at Akane as he pleads towards her, but this could also just be a look of pity. Additionally, while it is uncertain if it pertains to her original memories or a handover from her previous iteration, a flashback of her time with Akane when they were both kids was seen when talking to Teru. Despite this, Aoi has not regained her original memories, and not even an embarrassing moment involving Akane and Nene caused by Teru's actions and Akane's sudden confession was able to induce it, causing the both of them to resort to telling her everything instead.

Abilities[]

Memory Retention[]

This ability is possessed by some of the characters in the New Present, wherein they are still capable of remembering some details or memories that were originally possessed by their original counterparts. According to Akane however, this only lasts three days before the new memories overtake the older ones.

While not confirmed yet in Aoi's case, Teru told Akane that if something can jog her memory within the three days, then she might remember everything from her previous iteration, and much later, when Teru is going out of the Student Council Room hand-in-hand with Aoi, she gives Akane a sad stare, which may possibly hint at her remembering her previous memories, especially those with Akane. Later on, when talking to Teru as to their engagement, a flashback of her time with Akane when they were both kids was seen, which hints at her remembering her original iteration's memories

Spirit Sword Skills[]

This iteration of Akane Aoi has some skills in the use of swords capable of exorcism. Those skills allowed her to confront Yugi Amane with Teru's sword and hold him off long enough for both Akane and Nene to escape. This is presumably due to her upbringing to be an Akane kannagi and the future wife of a Minamoto Exorcist. This is also presumably a skill that the Original Timeline Aoi never learned in her life at all.

Trivia[]

  • In the New Pressent, Aoi's parents are broken up, with her father cheating on her mother and having two other daughters besides her. It is unknown if this is the case in the Original Timeline or one of the changes that Kako and Mirai made to the New Present.
  • Noticibly, this iteration of Aoi is more involved in participating in activities pertaining to the supernatural than her original iteration, who was either a damsel-in-distress that had to be rescued from the supernatural by her friends, or was willingly involved with one of them in order to get away from everyone.
    • This is proven by her having some skill in using a spirit sword like Teru's own, which she demonstrated when she held off Yugi Amane long enough so as to give both Yashiro Nene and Aoi Akane time to escape.
